![]() And the level themes are exciting and fun. Understanding and manipulating Sonic's physics is almost always doing to reward you. It's endlessly replayable, be if just you running through as fast as possible to get better at the timing or to go through it slowly to find all the secrets and explore the different pathways. It tells a nice story, it's got insanely good level design that understands the perfect balance of platforming challenges, choices that lead to different routes, and cinematic linear spectacle. ![]() It's still the best Sonic game of all time. for me it's Sonic 3 & Knuckles, when played together as the full game it was always meant to be. But how willing to dive into that end of things is entirely up to you and since the old versions of these games were delisted on Steam, it might require some shady ROM stuff to make work now (which I don't endorse, hopefully they find a way to make it work).Īs for what game is best. Sonic 3 AIR is still the GOAT, all the pluses of every version with zero downsides. Though, truthfully, there's fan-made releases on PC that no official version will ever touch. I've owned these games a million times by now and I had a great time with Origins, no regrets. So, yes, I think it's still worth having Origins. But even before the patch, the new stuff is great. They have confirmed a patch is coming though, so once that is out it'll likely be the best version WITHOUT the asterisk. ![]() The games always had bugs like these but Origins definitely introduces some new ones. In the PlayStation 2 version, both soundtrack files are actually still in the game and play the Japanese soundtrack if it detects the system settings as. There's a few other minor visual bugs here and there, and some moments where you can do some wacky unintended stuff. Some of the new features aren't implemented perfectly in all of the games. ![]() Origins is BY FAR the best official release of these games yet. There's also a mode that puts all four games together with adorable animated cutscenes between games to make a fun "Story Mode" type thing. As well as stuff like boss rush, mirror mode, and a collection of Missions that provide you small bite-sized challenges within each game with customized level design. Origins also has a bunch of extra features, like more playable characters (only Tails/Knuckles mind you) in the earlier games they aren't in before. The extra vision you get with an expanded screen let's you see further ahead which improves your reaction time and makes the gameplay flow so much better. They've got native widescreen, which is a HUGE improvement over all previous official versions. The versions in Origins are remakes on a new engine by the same people who made Sonic Mania. I went all out too and made a custom album art as well (the one you see above)Īs always, I can 100% guarantee you all my music is as lossless as physically possible. They're completely different versions of the games. I found out a bit later that Mega Collection Plus has one exclusive track as well, it's credits theme, so I ripped that as well. Ripped audio out of the SFD files manually with a hex editor and converted to flac. I couldn't find a soundtrack of the Sonic Collections that suited my standards well enough so I went and grabbed my Wii's big old hard drive and extracted both Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection with WIT (part of Wiimms ISO Tools) and used the VGMstream plugin for Winamp along with the Winamp Disk Writer output plugin to create Lossless WAVs of all the music, which I then promptly converted to FLAC, and tagged with the appropriate Information I could find about the artists on Sonic and Sega Retro. Like all my links, no bullshit, just direct links to the file.ĭownload!
